Boer goats are a meat breed
developed in South Africa. They are hardy goats with friendly, docile temperaments. Unlike some dairy breeds, they are not
hard on fencing and tend to be very quiet. Like all goats, they do require shelter from the elements (goats don't like
to get wet!), good quality feed and minerals and clean water. They are large goats with bucks weighing upwards of 300 lbs
and does in the 150-200 lb range. Boers were developed to raise multiple kids with ease, twins and triplets are the norm for
them. They cross well with several dairy goat breeds (Nubians and La Manchas, for example) and other meat goat breeds (Kikos
and Tennessee Fainting Goats, for example), producing kids that gain an average of a half pound a day.
The typical Boer goat is white with a red head (called
'traditional coloring'). The red may range from light to dark with orange, brown or reddish-black
also being acceptable. Solid colored (red or black) and paint (white body with red or black patches) Boers
are also becoming increasingly popular. Solid white fullblood Boers are not allowed.
Our goal is to produce animals that perform well
at home and in the show ring. We strive to keep our animals in exceptional condition. We
want our buyers to be happy with the goats they purchase from us whether they are buying breeding stock, 4-H/FFA market wethers,
pets or meat animals. Please contact us anytime with questions about our goats or goats in general.
We'd love to have you come for a farm visit!
All goats over 6 months of age are tested annually for CAE (Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis)
and CL (Caseous Lymphadenitis). Additionally, all goats over one year of age are tested for Johne's
Disease annually. As of June 2008, our herd is negative. We perform regular fecal checks
and de-worm our goats as needed. We vaccinate our goats annually with Covexin 8. Every
goat we sell will be properly tattooed and will be sent home with its registration papers (or a registration application)
and complete medical history.
We are members of the United States Boer Goat Association and all of our breeding stock is USBGA
registered.
